Field trips usually fall into one of two categories: the ones students politely enjoy, and the ones they talk about for the rest of the school year. Escape rooms tend to fall into the second category.
On paper, the activity sounds simple: students enter a room, solve puzzles, and try to escape within 60 minutes. But the real experience is something different.
It’s a room full of students suddenly realizing they can solve something together that none of them could solve alone. And along the way, they’re laughing, celebrating small wins, and, most importantly, having fun together. The camaraderie built in just 60 minutes can last in a classroom for the rest of the year.
In this post, we’ll share our best tips for planning an escape room field trip that both students and teachers will love.
Planning Considerations
Here are a few ideas to consider when planning an escape room field trip:
- Group Type: Escape room field trips aren’t just for traditional classrooms. Groups we regularly host include sports teams, homeschool groups, public schools, private schools, charter schools, youth organizations, and academic clubs.
- Age Range: Escape rooms are designed to be enjoyed by adults and kids alike. At Breakout, we offer family friendly themes suitable for a variety of ages. We’ve found that upper elementary school-high school students can all succeed in our escape rooms.
- Group Size: Each one of our Breakout locations has multiple escape rooms that can be run at once to involve your entire group. We recommend splitting your students into groups of 6-8, which keeps everyone involved.
- Booking Window: For the best experience, schools usually book about 3-4 weeks in advance, especially when reserving several rooms.
- Budget: If you're planning a field trip, sports team outing, or homeschool group activity, Breakout Games offers special rates for school and community groups to make organizing your visit easy.
What to Expect for Your Experience
Teachers and chaperones love that an escape room experience is organized and structured. Here’s what to expect for the flow of an escape room experience:
- Arrival: Your group will arrive to the facility and check in with our staff.
- Separating Into Groups: Your groups will separate into teams to play their assigned games.
- Instructions: Our staff of game masters will explain the rules and expectations of the game.
- Game Time: Each group will have 60 minutes to solve clues and ultimately escape! The entire experience is supervised and guided by our team of game masters.
- Checkout: After everyone’s time is up, you’ll have the chance to celebrate your wins (or mourn your losses) and reflect on the experience together.
The game itself lasts 60 minutes, but groups should plan for about 90 minutes total on-site to allow time for check-in and instructions. It’s an easy flow that fits well into the structure of a good field trip!
Educational Benefits
Escape rooms have strong educational benefits that both students AND teachers love.

But students don’t feel like they’re learning. They’re just having fun!
Having fun encourages both technical and social skills students need to succeed in school. After an escape room experience with us, teachers regularly report positive impacts in their classroom environments. That’s what makes an escape room field trip memorable long after the bus ride home.
