Debunking Escape Room Myths

There’s so much information out there about escape rooms that it’s hard to know what is and isn’t true. Many escape rooms differ from company to company. For example, some escape room companies have a limit on the number of clues you can ask for - but that’s not the case everywhere!
We’re here to help you dispel some common misconceptions about escape rooms. The more you know ahead of time, the better off you’ll be!

Myth #1: You’re locked in the room and cannot leave

While the name “escape room” may give the impression that you’re trapped in a room, you can rest easy knowing that you’re never actually locked inside the room. The doors remain unlocked at all times during your experience.
If there’s an emergency, you need to use the restroom, or you simply just want to leave the room - you absolutely can. Your safety is our top priority!

Myth #2: Asking for help during the game is a bad thing

We’ve talked about this many times before, but allow us to reiterate: Asking for a hint during your game is not an indicator that you’re not smart! Our escape rooms are designed to be challenging, and sometimes a puzzle won’t click right away.
That’s why we offer unlimited hints at all times. Your Game Master is there to help you and can give you a little nudge in the right direction. They will never give you the answer outright, but will “open the door” to help you get through it.

Myth #3: Escape rooms are scary

We hear this one all the time. The short answer to this is no, however, there are exceptions to this myth. Not every escape room company is created equal, therefore, there are definitely some scarier escape rooms out there. However, here at Breakout Games our rooms are created to be fun for everyone, even our more creepy themes.
We have themes that allow you to experience a safe amount of thrill, so, we’re never going to jumpscare you or lead you into danger. Additionally, some people suspect there will be a live actor in there to scare them - this is also untrue! While we can’t vouch for every escape room, you can be assured that your group will be the only people inside the room.

Bonus Quick Myths:

  1. Difficulty levels are important. This is entirely subjective and we’ve covered this at length in this post
  2. A game must have multiple rooms to good.
  3. You must have outside knowledge to solve the room.
We hope these tips help you for your next escape experience!
