Questions Your Game Master Secretly Wishes You'd Ask

Good communication with your teammates is vital in any escape room. However, sometimes players forget about their most valuable resource - the Game Master. Many players hesitate to ask questions, afraid they might sound foolish or get penalized for asking. Rest assured, that's not the case at Breakout!
Your Game Master is there for more than just observing your game; their primary role is to guide you through the room when you need it the most. Asking a helpful question or getting clarification on something can save you valuable time and prevent future frustration, no matter if you’re new or experienced.
We’ve gathered several questions from our Game Masters that they wish players would ask more often, and we hope that you find them helpful!

Confirmation & Clarification

The main goal for this set of questions is to get confirmation or clarification on a specific task done in the room. If asked, you might be able to prevent your group from making a minor mistake, derailing your entire experience.
  1. “Are we on the right track?” This one is great for when you’re confident about your progress, but you’re unsure if the result you're getting is correct. Your Game Master will typically review the last steps you took to help confirm what is right while giving you that reassurance you need to progress.
  2. “Can I ask questions without them being counted as a hint?” Asking for clarification on a code or what a clue is asking is not against the rules - we encourage it actually! If something doesn’t make sense to you, your Game Master help you understand how it relates to the gameplay.

Room Boundaries

Before you begin any escape room, you will likely get an introduction to the game and some basic guidelines to follow regarding your safety and how to appropriately play the game. While we might answer some of your questions during the intro, you might have a few things you’re still curious about.
  1. “Should we open this? Can we do XYZ?”  As a general rule of thumb, nothing in the room will require you to use brute force. If it’s labeled or doesn’t move easily, leave it as you found it. Additionally, if something seems like it shouldn’t be disturbed, 9 out of 10 times you won’t need to interact with it.
  2. “Are any clues or items used more than once?” The short answer to this one is no. However, there are rare exceptions to this rule. You won’t use a code more than once, but you might use an item, like a blacklight, for more than one puzzle. This is rare, but it does happen. Asking for clarification here can prevent you from over-analyzing already used items.
  3. “Do we need to know anything about XYZ to solve this?” All of the information necessary to solve a puzzle is always going to be provided to you in the room. We intentionally design our games so that you never need any outside knowledge on a topic before playing. In fact, outside knowledge can sometimes be a hindrance, causing you to overthink on the puzzle at hand!

Conclusion

Remember, your Game Master is a powerful resource, but it’s ultimately up to you to use them! They don’t want to see you fail, they truly want to see you succeed. We encourage you to use these questions during your next escape room experience - you never know how helpful it can be!
