When you're planning a fun-filled afternoon with friends, family, or coworkers, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is, "How long does an escape room take?" The short answer is 60 minutes for the game itself. The full experience, including your briefing, the game, and celebration afterward, usually takes between 75 and 90 minutes. That gives you plenty of time to get to your dinner reservations on time, grab drinks or coffee, or spend the rest of the day exploring downtown while you relive the game’s surprises, swap notes, and compare puzzle strategies.
How long is the actual game?
At Breakout, our games are 60 minutes. It's enough time to settle into the story, uncover clues, solve puzzles, and still feel a sense of urgency. You’ll be surprised by how quickly the hour passes. Once you're immersed in the mystery, the countdown seems to fly by.
The hour of shared adventure means that by the time you’ve left our doors, everyone has stories to tell. Laugh about the clue you completely missed (and didn’t need anyway), celebrate your teammate solving that puzzle in seconds, and debate whether you would have escaped in time if you hadn’t asked for that last hint.
How long should I plan to be at the venue?
The full experience typically runs 75–90 minutes when you include the pre-game briefing, the game itself, and the post-game wrap-up and photos. Many groups build an entire outing around their game. Grab lunch before your reservation, test your teamwork in the escape room, then head to a nearby coffee shop or brewery to relive the experience. There's plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day without feeling rushed.
Do harder rooms take longer?
All of the rooms at Breakout take 60 minutes. If you’re stuck on a clue and the clock’s ticking, you can always ask for a hint. We let you as the escape room player control the difficulty level through the number of hints you decide to use. We want our rooms to be accessible for everyone. Whether it’s your first time playing or you’re an escape room fanatic, we want you to have a great time. We put you in charge of your own challenge so you can cater the experience to fit YOU!
What happens if you don't escape in time?
Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. As long as you had fun, you still won. Your game master will let you know that time’s up, commiserate with you, answer your questions, and take pictures. They’re as invested in your game as you are, so they’ll be happy to give you some tips for breaking out next time.
If you’re just dying to break out, we do have some tips and tactics as well as suggestions on when to ask for a hint to help you be as prepared as possible.
How long does an escape room take with a big group?
The same as with a small group! The clock is ticking, whether your group is 2 people or 8.
Many groups build an entire outing around their game. Grab lunch before your reservation, test your teamwork in the escape room, then head to a nearby coffee shop or brewery to relive the experience. With games only lasting an hour, there's plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day without feeling rushed.
Whether you're squeezing an adventure into a busy weekend or planning the hero activity for an afternoon with friends, you only need to set aside about an hour and a half for the full experience. That leaves plenty of time to continue the fun afterward, making an escape room an easy activity to build an entire outing around.
