Whether you’re feeling proud of an escape room win or a little sad over a loss, you might be wondering, “How often do people escape from escape rooms?”
Escape Room Success Rates
The answer to this question can vary widely by the escape room company you choose. Some escape rooms keep close records of players’ wins and losses. And some may even advertise a breakout percentage with their room. You might see anywhere from 20-75%, depending on the room’s difficulty.
However, at Breakout Games, we do things a little differently. We do not rank our escape rooms by difficulty. We give all players unlimited hints during the game. This means that you as the player can control the difficulty of your experience by the number of hints you ask for.
If you want the room to be easier, you can ask for more hints. If you want the room to be more challenging, you can ask for fewer hints.
So at Breakout, we don’t have a solid escape rate. Success rates depend on the experience of the escape room players and how many hints they use.
Want to increase your chance of escaping? Here are some tips for what you SHOULD do and what you SHOULDN’T do.
What You SHOULD Do in an Escape Room
- Search the room carefully. Many times players miss important steps and clues in escape rooms because they didn’t search thoroughly enough. Pro tip: be sure to look for clues that are not just at eye level (which would be your natural inclination). Search both high and low (just don’t climb in the ceiling!)
- Communicate what you find to your teammates. If you see something, say something! Be sure the whole team knows what you’re working on so no one misses anything.
- Ask for hints when you need them. While it’s totally up to you how many hints you use at Breakout, we definitely encourage you to use them. It’s very rare that a group will break out with no hints. So use them when you’re stuck. Read this post to know more about when to ask for a hint.

What You Should NOT Do in an Escape Room
- Ignore instructions. Before you start your escape room, your game master will give you some instructions and important tips. Now is not the time to tune out! Be sure to listen carefully so you have the best chance of escaping the room.
- Force solutions. Some players have a tendency to try to force solutions to escape room problems. They’ll keep putting the same answer into a solution that isn’t working, insisting that it has to be right. We know it’s frustrating when you work hard to come up with an answer that isn’t working out. But it’s better to move on and try a new approach if you come up against a dead end.
- Try random codes. It is extremely rare that you will get an escape room code by guessing or trying something random. Your time is much better spent solving the puzzles to come up with a deliberate answer rather than playing guessing games.

Wrapping Up
While escape room success rates vary, at Breakout, we let our players control their own level of challenge. If you want the best chance of breaking out, we recommend following our tips and asking for hints when you get stuck.
